Member of honor : Edgar MORIN

Presentation of the editor :

Impassioning and rich dialogue between two thinkers of our time whose common feature is the interdisciplinarity: sociology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Morin and Cyrulnik note one and the other the indissociability of the brain and the spirit, the interdependence of cultural and psychological, cerebral and the biological one. To the fragmentation of the compartmentalized speech, techno-scientist, they oppose the speech of the gathering, connection, the communication and the empathy.

Presentation of the editor

We ask the thought that it dissipate the fogs and the darknesses, that it puts order and clearness in reality, that it reveals the laws which control it. The word of complexity, can only express our embarrassment to him, our confusion, our incapacity to define in a simple way, to name in a clear way, to order our ideas. Its definition first cannot provide any elucidation: is complex what cannot be summarized in a Master word, which cannot be brought back to a law nor to be reduced to a simple idea. Complexity is a word problem and not a word solution. Edgar Morin proposes here a thought which takes up the challenges of complexity in order to better include/understand our people, our humanity, our world.

Fourth of cover :

Who are we? More we know the human one less include/understand we it: dissociations between disciplines split up it, empty it life, of flesh, of complexity, and certain sciences considered human drain even the concept of man. This work breaks with the parcelling out of the human one. It breaks with the reducing designs (homo sapiens, homo, faber and homo economicus) which deprive the human being at the same time of biological identity, subjective identity and social identity. Rather than to juxtapose the knowledge dispersed in sciences and humanities, this book is given for vocation to connect them, articulate them, reflect them in order to think human complexity. It complexes the direction of the word man by reinstating the female one in it occulted under the male connotation, and by giving him the direction trinitaire which locates it at the laws in and out nature: individual, company, species; it proposes to conceive these terms in their complementarities like in their antagonism: reciprocal. It tries to think a humanity enriched by all its contradictions (the human one and the inhuman one, the return to oneself and the opening to the others, rationality and affectivity, reason and the myth, the antiquated one and the history, determinism and freedom). This humanity runs the risk unceasingly to degenerate, risk in which however it can be regenerated. Finally this book considers the destiny of the human identity which is played in the planetary crisis in progress. It is vital from now on to teach humanity with humanity. The human Identity is the synthesis of a life: all the topics of preceding works of the author are joined together in a configuration and an orchestration news.

SDM : Vast reflexion on the knowledge, in multi-field matter and transdisciplinaire. The author is an intellectual guide who borrows from sociology, philosophy and biology; he has recourse to the concepts of systems, organization and cybernetics. -- Documentary Services Multi-media

Presentation of the editor:

With the publication of this fifth volume, Edgar Morin continues the achievement of a singular work - Method - already greeted and recognized in many countries. In this volume (which will be followed of a "Ethics"), it proposes to explore this imperceptible human identity in which Pascal saw a "mystery" or one "embrouillement". What makes us man? Which is, in our irreducible identity, the share of biology, that of the History or the policy? "the knowledge of the human one - he writes - must be at the same time a more scientist, much more philosophical and finally much more poetic than it is it" In these dazzling pages of scholarship and of freedom, Edgar Morin, one included/understood it, continues his combat which been obstinated against the splitting up of the knowledge, which is too often only the alibi of a renouncement to be thought. The human Identity is the synthesis of a life: all the topics of preceding works of the author are joined together in a new orchestration. The vocation of this book is to connect the knowledge on the human one dispersed in sciences and humanities, to articulate them, to reflect them in order to think human complexity at the same time in its biological identity, its subjective identity and its social identity.

Presentation of the editor

This sixth and last volume of the Method constitutes the point of arrival of the philosopher's stone of Edgar Morin, translated and taken again in edition of pocket in many countries. This work made complexity a fundamental problem elucidate and treat; since, it made school and caused a movement "to reform the thought". In this volume 6, most concrete and, perhaps, most accessible, the author starts from our contemporary crisis, properly Western, from ethics and returns there finally after an examination to the laws anthropological, historical and philosophical. If the duty cannot result from a knowledge, the duty needs a knowledge. The moral conscience cannot result from the intellectual conscience but it needs the intellectual conscience, i.e. of thought and reflexion. Indeed, the good intention is likely to determine bad actions and the moral will to have immoral consequences. From where relevance of the moral precept of Pascal: "to work with thinking well". To make its duty is often neither simple nor obvious, but dubious and random: this is why ethics is complex. Beyond the moralism as beyond the nihilism, the author, rather than to yield to the traditional claim to found morals, seeks to find and regenerate the sources in the life of them, in the company in the individual, since the human one is at the same time individu/société/espèce. He deals with permanent but unceasingly worsened problems relation between ethics and policy, science and ethics.

Presentation of the editor

death is what identifies the man with the animal and what it differentiates from it. Like any alive being, the man undergoes death. With the difference any alive being, it denies death in its beliefs in beyond. Edgar Morin releases the fundamental attitudes of the men and the cultures with regard to death. It examines the horror of death, the risk of death, the murder, and the two great myths originating in the dead one: that of survival and that of the rebirth. It releases the beliefs concerning death in great historical civilizations to arrive from there at the contemporary crisis of dead and the new biological designs on the relations between life and dead.

Description

A strange rumour (the disappearance of girls in the fitting salons of Jewish tradesmen) was spread, without there being least disappearance, in the city whose name symbolizes measurement and balance: Orleans. Edgar Morin and a team of researchers carried out the survey on the spot. Why Orleans? Why Jews? Why and how a rumour is propagated? Does this rumour convey a myth? Which is this myth and which he says us on our culture and ourselves? Questions arise: did an anti-semitism hitherto latent again wake up? There is not, in our modern cities, a new Age Means which advances?

SDM

The work appeared for the first time in 1969. It acts of a sociological study of the set of themes of the rumour, through a rumour which circulated in Orleans (in France): Jewish tradesmen would have delivered themselves to the draft of the women. The author sees in this rumour the mythological twinning of two sets of themes: draft of white and anti-semitism. The company of demythification of the author was without effect, because the same phenomenon reproduced elsewhere in France. Second half of the book contains information on the survey carried out to this occasion and reproduced documents into the subject. -- Documentary Services Multi-media

Complexus: what is woven together. The unit of the search for Edgar Morin is with a view to a mutilated knowledge neither nor partitioned, which can respect the individual one and the singular so much while inserting it in its context and its unit. In this direction: - it carried out research in contemporary sociology (the Spirit of Time, the Metamorphosis of Plozevet, the Rumour of Orleans). - it endeavoured to conceive anthropo-social complexity by including there biological dimension and imaginary dimension (the man and death, the Cinema or the imaginary man, the lost Paradigm). - it states a diagnosis and an ethics for the fundamental problems of our time (to leave the XXe century, Penser Europe, Ground-Fatherland). - finally, it has been devoted for twenty years to the development of a method (the Method, 1. Nature, 2. Life of the life, 3. The Knowledge of knowledge, 4. The Ideas) which would allow a reform of the thought.

"the social sciences are not aware of the physical and biological characters of the human phenomena. The natural science is not aware of their inscription in a culture, a company, a history. Sciences are not aware of their role in the company. Sciences are not aware of the occult principles which order their elucidations. Aware only it they are not misses sciences a conscience. But from everywhere is born the need for a science with conscience. It is time to become aware of the complexity of any reality - physics, biological, human, social, political - and of the reality of complexity. It is time to become aware that a private science of reflexion and that a purely speculative philosophy are insufficient. Conscience without science and science without conscience are mutilated and mutilating "

Presentation of the editor:

"Europe was the hearth of a barbarian domination on the world during five centuries. It was at the same time the hearth of the ideas émancipatrices which sapped this domination. It is necessary to include/understand the complex, antagonistic and complementary relation, between culture and cruelty, to better know to resist cruelty. The tragedies experiments of the XXe century must lead to a new humanistic conscience. What is important, it is not the repentance, it is the recognition. This recognition must relate to all the victims: Jews, Blacks, Gypsies, homosexual, Armenian, colonized Algeria or of Madagascar. It is necessary if one wants to overcome European cruelty. It is necessary to be able to think European cruelty to exceed it, because the worst is always possible. In the medium of the desert threatening of cruelty, we are for the moment under the relative protection of an oasis. But we also know that we are under historico-politico-social conditions which return the worst possible one, particularly at the time of the paroxystic periods. Cruelty threatens us, including behind the strategies which are supposed to be opposed to it "
